need some help

Tae-ho just finished reading "Lord of the Flies" and he asked me what the underlying meaning of the book was. I told him it was losing youthful innocence, but I also mentioned that he (Golding) wrote the book as a counter to "Catcher in the Rye". If anyone knows if this is true or not, and the reason why, comment.

I've always thought it was supposed to prove human depravity, that no matter how well you've been raised or whatever, people have carnal instincts that can and will lead them into destruction. I definitely wrote a paper on it, but I can't remember =(
